The disc golf world is at a point where it is ready to explode onto the mainstream scene. More people are aware of the sport of disc golf than ever before in history and it is opening up some big opportunities. Recently, one of the biggest names in the sport and the number one ranked player in the world, Will Schusterick, announced he will be leaving his main sponsor Innova Discs. This is shocking news to most of the disc golf community.
Will said that he wanted to move on to bigger and better things. This came on a pod cast published by a website called Furthering the Disc which apparently is Will’s own project designed on brining disc golf media to people all over the world.
So what does this mean for Schusterick?
Speculation is roaming around that he will be starting his own disc company although that can’t be verified yet. The one thing that is for sure is that Schusterick has the name and the contacts as well as the ambition to create whatever he can dream in the world of disc golf.
Some experts say that if larger corporations better used their resources, disc golf could be main stream already. With popularity growing and an internal drive within the disc golf community to bust out of the ‘hobby’ category, there is room for creative and positively motivated companies to start up.
More disc manufacturers are popping up as well as disc golf centered brands accelerating disc golf awareness. It is a bold move for Will Schusterick to venture on his own for next season, however I don’t think he would do it without a good reason. Either Innova is not giving Will what he needs or he sees more opportunity elsewhere or both. Either way I’m sure he is thinking about the future with every decision he makes.
2013 is shaping up to be an exciting year in the world of disc golf. More players, higher skill levels, more sponsors and media all equals more fans.
